MAIN TRAIN STATION AREA

The train station area started to develop after the new railroad was build in 1870 and connected Ljubljana with Gorenjska region and further with Austria and Germany. In the 20th century Kranj area was one of the most industrialized areas in the country and the main train station area developed into a regional logistics centre. The area is bordered with railroad tracks on one side and Sava river and motorway on the other side. Except the road that leads to the train station building, there are no other public roads in the area. A three-storey warehouse from the 1960s, curved along the bypass, marks the area.

In the last 20 years, the area of around 90.000m2 is in decline. The biggest public land owner in the case study is a Slovenian railways company. The “Merkur” trade company, the biggest private land owner in the area is willing to sell its premises. Most of the railways area and buildings are abandoned, except the main station building that is in use, and is a cultural heritage building, is well preserved.

Objectives and activities of the planned pilot project:
• sustainable development of the area;
• new generation detailed planning documents;
• integration of the area with the rest of the city;
• to make good use of its proximity to the river, city centre, national airport…;
• attract large investors that would co-operate in a PPP.
